TOP TEN Must Haves From the Honest Weight Bulk Department
1. Raw cashews
Soak them, blend them up, and create the creamiest sauces, dips, soups, and ice cream.
2. Flax (or chia) seeds
Grind up your seeds and leave them in a jar in the refrigerator for a super quick egg replacement in baking. Mix 1 Tbs. ground flax or chia with 2.5 Tbs. water, let sit for 5 minutes, and you have a vegan egg.
3. Nutritional yeast
Adds delicious cheesy flavoring to popcorn, pasta dishes. An excellent source of protein and the all-important B vitamins, including B12.
4. Vital wheat gluten
This flour-like powder is chock full of protein and is the key ingredient in homemade seitan for meaty main dishes and holiday roasts.
5. Soy curls
A tasty meat alternative for BBQ or endless other possibilities.
6. Dried chickpeas and specialty beans
Chickpea salad, chili, hummus (a vegan food group in and of itself?), & oven-roasted chickpeas are just a few of the menu ideas that come to mind here. Try sprouting your beans and other grains to improve nutritional content
7. Kala namak
Aka black salt, adds a delightful egginess to tofu scramble, chickpea omelettes or any savory breakfast meal.
Start your day right with Honest Weight Food Co-op’s vast selection of loose leaf tea and fair trade coffee.
Add bladderwrack or dulse bits to soups, vegan crab cakes, chickpea salad. Try a piece of kombu in the water when cooking your dried beans to make the beans more digestible and enhance their flavor. Most will provide you with beneficial minerals including calcium, iron, zinc, and iodine.
10. Freshly ground peanut butter
Watch the grinder fill your jar with fresh peanut butter before your eyes. Add some to your smoothies and overnight oats for a nutty flavor boost. No matter your age, a good ole pb&j is a quintessential vegan meal.
Truly, there are just too many goodies to pick only ten, so we couldn’t help ourselves but add on a few more items for your consideration and enjoyment:
